Furutani  has crafted ceramics in various locations around the world, including the United States and Denmark. He is a highly regarded contemporary Tenmoku artist. Furutani is also the only modern potter to challenge the firing of Tenmoku ceramics using an anagama kiln (wood-fired kiln). Due to the unpredictability of the anagama kiln compared to electric kilns, sometimes the colors achieved exceed expectations.
